At that time we were looking for sharing knowledge data that had been gathered along years with Apple's Hypercard, but whose shareability was not feasible under an environment made of heterogeneous workstations and PCs.

After having set up a proto version using NCSA Mosaic, the advent of Netscape was the signal that this technology was being mature enough for the industrial world to adopt it. It was back in 1994 or 1995.
A few random things about Netscape, 1994-2008 - Mister Barkurn:md5:fe3098d0b41bae2a1111b1b18f04e72e2008-03-04T14:44:59+01:002008-03-04T14:57:10+01:00Mister Bark
@Tristan, je t eremercie pour cette iùage !
A few random things about Netscape, 1994-2008 - Christian Melocheurn:md5:0a31a94c8ad9367de2595f20d4b900032008-03-02T01:34:19+01:002008-03-02T10:41:33+01:00Christian Meloche
I remember the incredible sense that we were changing the world. Jim Barksdale once said that the reason he was doing all this, even though he had already a long career behind him and lots of accumulated wealth, was because there was a revolution out there and that he wanted to be able to tell his grand children that he was there. We all had that feeling and this is why we worked such long hours. I remember spending an entire night at the CNIT ( The Paris Netscape Office), helping the then unknown Tristan Nitot setup a Network for a training or session of some sort. But in the end we may have forgotten that a corporation is a "for profit" organization and maybe not the best vehicle to change the world. Maybe the Mozilla foundation will have more latitude because of its legal structure and lack of share holders.

In any case memories are great and it is true that everywhere I have worked since, I always look back at the Netscape years and try to replicate some of it
